ON-SCREEN romantic chemistry is often elusive among leading couples for most local productions.In decades of Malaysian cinema, there have been only a handful of screen couples, almost iconic for their uncanny ability to convince cinemagoers that they’re a match made in heaven.

Into their fourth attempt, Lisa Surihani and Farid Kamil seem to be headed down this path, thanks to producer David Teo, who’s continuing his role as their ‘matchmaker’.The head honcho of MIG Production Sdn Bhd (MIG) had previously put the two together for its previous films such as I’m Not Single and Remp-It V3.This formula was recently borrowed by Tarantella Pictures for, Lagenda Budak Setan as well as a serial drama in Tiga Janda.Now the couple are reunited in MIG’s upcoming 37th feature film release, Semerah Cinta Stileto.

Directed by Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nadzri, Lisa and Farid play characters Stila and Leto in what Teo calls ‘the screen dream’ and the perfect couple.“I want to make them the romantic couple icon. Their chemistry on-screen is obvious and I know they will woo the audience with the believability of their match-up.”For Farid, Teo’s expectations are not exactly far-fetched. “It’s actually a good thing because we are familiar with the way each other works and our chemistry has been apparent from our first time in I’m Not Single.

“What David Teo sees in us, is for him, but I do feel that we are compatible in that sense and we don’t have to try harder than we have to as it just comes naturally for us to act across from each other,” Farid added.Shooting for Semerah Cinta Stileto began on Aug 12 and features a cast of familiar names like Nanu Baharudin, Cat Farish, Shaharudin Thamby, Datuk Jamali Shadat, Maimon Muttalib, Angah and Mie from Raja Lawak, Rama as well as Kenchana Dewi.

Farid said, “Lisa has matured in her acting, especially since she has done a lot more acting since then, and it really does show.”He plays a middle income fishmonger who lives in a flat, that through a series of events, gets acquainted with Stila, who resides in a bungalow just in across from his flat.The movie’s storyline revolves around the differences between them which actually draws the couple closer.

As usual, family opposition is expected to add to the drama. For Lisa, while giving it her all, getting into character for Semerah Cinta Stileto was not too much of a challenge.“We (Farid and I) have worked together, so any ‘on-screen love affairs’ are not exactly new to us as a couple.“Still, it’s my responsibility to deliver and I keep finding something new each time to put into my acting. And I think that with every film, I get a little better at it.”For director Ahmad Idham, the movie’s theme does not centre so much on the simple boy meets girl major drama awaits as family oppose theme.“It’s also a social commentary,” he said.

“We lace a popcorn appeal film like this, to send out stronger messages. For Semerah Cinta Stileto, it revolves more about ‘does your fate or where you were born make you who you are?Do you get a leg-up in life, just because you are more fortunate?’” He said this approach was to enable the audience to think without burdening them too much with more serious approaches.
